Things to Know Before Buying New Software

There are 20+ things everyone should know about the software program they are intending to buy. We all get excited when it comes to purchasing new software.

It can be difficult to slow down and do the needed research before purchasing the program.

Will the program run on the computer system we have now or do you need to upgrade?

Do you have enough memory and storage? Memory is the working area where the data is brought in, then added to or manipulated is some way. Storage is the space needed on the hard drive to store the data that was changed in the memory.

Is this new software compatible with other software you have or will you need to buy other programs in order to run this one?

What versions of Windows does it use?

How easy is the program to install or uninstall? What will happen if the installation stops before finishing? Can you just restart the installation or do you need to uninstall and start over?

How much training is needed? Is it user friendly? How do you get help? Are there books, user groups or forums,or user guides? Are there free events and seminars, or on demand? This is a huge area that can cause the user to be frustrated. Once the sealed software package has been opened, it cannot be returned to the store except for a replacement of the same software.

Do you have the correct hardware, speakers and graphics card? Are there plug-ins that you can buy?

What are the licenses agreements and how many licenses will you need? The license agreement can be very intimidating and difficult to understand.

Will this program be on a network? The licenses for networks are purchased in groups starting at 5 users, up to over 1,000 for large business.

How much does the software cost? Will the cost out way the benefits of the program?

There are many things to consider when purchasing new software that may not be obvious in the beginning. You need to consider who the users will be, if this purchase will be for your home or for your office. Always research any software and only buy from trusted companies.
