e-Books have the same type of sections as a printed book. The dimensions are smaller and the use of graphics is more liberal. Many e-Books use the .pdf format. These down

e-Books are electronic books. They are usually published with a .pdf format. There are some special software programs to create e-books. Any software that saves files in the .pdf file format will work. But if you want to add some hotlinks, you will need more than a word processor.

How to:

  • Create a document template and keep page size smaller, about 6 x 9 is a popular size.
  • Margins should be large enough to spread out text. Too much text will be difficult to read.
  • Start by typing your book as a document. Insert columns, headers and footers, tabs and graphics the same as you would for any other document. Times New Roman is an excellent font to use because the serifs help guide the eye. Use fonts that have serifs (or little lines) for the body of the book. Fonts with no serifs work well for headings. Stay away from fancy fonts that may be pretty to look at but hard to read, basic fonts work best.

When using graphics with text, the background colors should not interfere with reading the text.

e-Books should have most of these sections:

  • Front Cover
  • Title Page
  • Copyright Page
  • Table of Contents Foreword / Bio
  • Book Pages
  • List of Terms
  • List of Photos and Acknowledgements
  • Index
  • Back Cover

Pages should be numbered starting with the book section. Other pages should be numbered using Roman Numerals. Include chapters, section headers and footers. When your book is finished, try reading it on different types of monitors. A CRT and an LCD.

There are many free programs you can download for free that will convert most word processing software pro-grams to .pdf format. Click here to download one of my favorite open source programs.
