Google has created several new web-based software programs that work like word processors and spreadsheets! Google Docs & Spreadsheets programs work with most of the popular office software, Microsoft Office, Corel, and Lotus Notes, and they are all interchangeable.
Imagine starting a web-based document in California and finishing it after landing in New York! And the software is not on your computer! You can also start it now, save the document, and someone else can then open it and add information to it, and not have a word processor or spreadsheet program on their computer either.
This is a great program for a small business with limited resources. Word processing and spreadsheets are the 2 most popular office software programs that almost everyone can use.
Now, there will not be any compatibility issues from computer to computer because everyone has the same program. This can be a real headache for any business with limited resources and many different computers with different software releases.
For example, an older computer may have Windows 98 and Office 97. A newer computer may have come with Windows XP and Office 2003. Even though they are using software from the same manufacturer, the different releases may not work together. Usually, a newer version of the software can use the files created with the older version, but the older version cannot use the files created with the newer software.
Email works well for sharing documents but takes longer. First, the document needs to be created, and then sent off in an email message.
Think about the ease of corresponding with your family and colleagues. When everyone knows the address and name of your documents, all they need to do is to log into the web site and open the document. Anyone can then add information to your document. There are also editing tools online, you can upload your Word, OpenOffice, Corel Word Perfect, RTF, HTML and text documents.
What if you need something more secure? If security is an issue, then save your documents to your hard drive or flash drive. You can still use the web-based software and your work will be secure.
To find your free web-based office products, go into the internet and type in "Free Web-Based Documents". Google, ThinkFree and other web sites offer word processors, spreadsheets, PDF file converters, and just about anything!
Web-based software will be the way of the future. The cost of software is quickly growing higher and higher. Keeping up with the upgrades, the training and equipment can become quite costly. Also, at the rate software is progressing, it is outdated shortly after being released!
With web-based office software, the only cost is your computer and internet service. Why not put your money into your hardware that will serve you longer, rather than into software that you will only use a small fraction of its many options!
